Pasadena Chalk Festival

The largest street painting festival in the world, this festival will "draw" nearly 600 artists from across Southern California, who will use 25,000 sticks of pastel chalk to create masterpieces on pavements the size of two city blocks.  This one-of-a-kind public art event is FREE of charge and is now in its 16th year.  Click here to learn more.

Enjoy rare film prints presented by animation historian Jerry Beck, who will also introduce the 90 min. program.  The clips will all be cartoons created prior to Hollywood's Production Code, so they are all artistically uninhibited.  These trippy cartoon shorts will star characters such as: Betty Boop, Krazy Kat, and Flip the Frog.

LA Derby Dolls: Sirens vs. Tough Cookies


For those of you who haven't heard of the Derby Dolls, you should have!

They are LA's women's quad skate roller derby league.  More than sixty women are divided into four teams, and compete against each other with five players on each.  They skate around a banked track, trying to prevent the other teams' "jammer" from scoring (think: hockey meets Harry Potter's Quidditch).

Make Music Pasadena Festival

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead

Ferris Wheel Frenzy

According to the LA Times, the Santa Monica Pier is debuting its new ferris wheel, and everyone can ride for free from 9:15pm until midnight.  There will also be free popcorn, cotton candy, and live music following the lighting ceremony and fireworks at 8pm.

The new 90-ft. wheel will be solar powered-assisted, equipped with 160,000 LED lights.  The old wheel sold on e-bay for $132,400.
